Sodium Alginate, also called algin, is one kind of electrolyte of organic macromolecule among algae of brown algae types, such as kelp, as principal components of cell membrane with other substances.
Chemical components of Sodium Alginate belong to carbohydrate and it only contains free carboxyl (-COONa) in contrast with starch and fibrin. At the same time, it is one kind of chain type macromolecule heteropolymer brought by copolymerization between mannuronic acid and guluronicacid.
Polymerization Degree of Sodium Alginate differs according to raw materials and distilling methods. Generally speaking, degree of polymerization of common algin is within the range from 80 to 750, molecular weight is from 14000 to 132000. Equivalent weight of sodium alginate is 196.
Sodium Alginate does not dissolve to methanol, ethanol, acetone and chloroform; dissolve to sodium hydroxide liquid and water; monatomic base alkali salt, such as soduim salt and sylvite, as well as ammonium salt, magnesium salts and mercury salt all dissolve to water and become into thick liquid. Multivalent metal salt of algin does not dissolve to water, except magnesium salts and mercury salt.

a. Moulage Materials for Dentistry
In the past, moulage for dentistry is made of rubber and gesso which is substituted by Sodium Alginate moulage materials with simple operation and accurate tooth form. In addition, moulage materials and coagulator are packed into two bags, while using, mix the two then they will be hard set within several minutes.
Fiber type sedimentation of Sodium Alginate liquid appears in acid or calcium salt and the molecular structure is in the form of thread, therefore it can be made of different haemostatics, such as hemostatic gauze, hemostatic sponge, scalding gauze and spraying haemostatic.
c. Resist and hinder radioelement and harmful metal
As Sodium Alginate has special ability to transmit some elements, thus it has good effect to prevent Sr.absorption, as well as good treatment. Being contaminated by radiostrontium, take some Sodium Alginate orally, radiostrontium in the alimentary canal can be discharged quickly.
d. Ointment,Tablet and Preparation
Making use of the thickening and gel characteristics, Sodium Alginate can be used as additive of different medicines,for instance sulfur ointment, which can cure skin disease, is mixed by sponge natrium and lanolin; Sodium Alginate can also be mixed with sulfonamide and used as oculentum, and used as conception control ointment after mixing with benzene and acetic acid. Glucosidase algin can be made into capsule for intestine so that the medicine can stop in the intestine to enhance medical treatment.
Printing& Textile Industry
Sodium Alginate has been used for sizing twist yarn, neatening pulp and printing pulp for a long time, especially the printing pulp. Sodium Alginate has special performance as active dyestuff color paste. After reaction between fiber and active dyestuff, the dyestuff will be fixed on the fiber, printing pulp should not disturb or take part in the reaction in the process of dying. If color paste takes part in the reaction, it will be fixed on the fiber resulting hard fiber, crisp performance and bad color. While using Sodium Alginate as printing pulp, dyeing process between active dyestuff and fiber will not be affected, while the grain is clear and bright with good feelings. It fits for dyeing cotton, as well as stamping wool, silk and composite fiber.
Sodium Alginate with medium viscidity and low viscidity fits for requirement from screen type printing to roller type printing paste. Actually, printing paste is stable with application of low viscidity Sodium Alginate, then top grade printing paste can be gained. Dense membrane can be got in the drying process adding painting rate.
b.Synthetic Fiber After mixing with short fiber of asbestos and concretion treatment with lime acetate liquid, the asbestos can be prevented to fly away without affecting health of human being.
Water-soluble Sodium Alginate can substitute dispersant of some rosin paper pulp or paper sizing for paper making,then smoothness of paper surface can be enhanced. At the same time, it can regulate absorption of printing ink, wax and oil to enhance its resistance to massage. Cladding of welded bar: after mixing arc welding electrodes with Sodium Alginate, alginato de potassio and calcium alginate, cladding of medical materials can be conglutinated, therefore enough plasticity can be gained in the extruding process. At the same time, it can be easily burned, thus splash can be lessened.
In addition, Sodium Alginate fits for resin dope, rubber creaming agent, pole insulation layer of battery and water treatment. Moreover, it can also be used to process seeds, and applied as pesticide and antivirus materials.
